Strengthening environmental knowledge on digital components.

Environmental considerations related to digital technologies are becoming increasingly central to industrial strategies, public action, and regulatory frameworks. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), in particular, is widely used to evaluate environmental performance and to inform design choices, investment decisions, and policy orientations across the digital sector. To be effective, LCA-based assessments rely on robust, transparent, and well-documented environmental knowledge. For many fundamental digital components, however, this knowledge remains unevenly structured, difficult to access, or insufficiently harmonised across actors. This situation limits the comparability of results and weakens their consistent use in decision-making processes.

Five fantastics

The digital sector has long lacked the environmental intelligence that it needs to enable life cycle assessment and eco-design. naknow's Project #1 was built to change that.

An open platform publishing expert-validated Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) data for five core families of electronic components: silicon wafers, PCBs, displays, HDDs, and optical components. By opening the black box around these 5 key components we can see what the hotspots are and how we can reduce the environmental footprint of the digital industry!

Project #2

Data gap

The basic components of the digital industry are semiconductors. From data storage to calculation, everything goes through chips and wafers!

The semiconductor industry requires high purity metals and gases and very specific elements in its processes. The environmental impact of those critical elements is still largely unknown. We are facing a data gap! Project #2 aims to unlock this situation by creating those missing elements environmental impact dataset and filling this data gap.
